Dear CopyNighters,
Labor Day is almost upon us, and you know what that means. Before
you head off to Burning Man, buy tickets for the Toronto Film
Festival, or pick fall classes, it's time for the last CopyNight
of the summer! Most chapters meet this Tuesday, August 28, in
cities around the world. Be sure to check the website for details
on your local chapter, and shoot us an email if you'd like to
start something in your city!

~ WTO May Let Antigua Ignore US Copyrights
When the US banned some forms of online gambling -- i.e.
Caribbean-run operations that provide online poker -- but left
American wagering services like lotteries and horse racing alone,
tiny island nation Antigua cried foul. They took their case to
the World Trade Organization, which twice ruled that the US was
engaging in unfair trade practices. Now, all they have to do is
determine a remedy. But because Antigua is so small, the only
remedy that would make America take notice would be a very rare
move indeed: allow Antiguans to copy movies, films, books, or
anything else protected by US copyright. For free. Uncle Sam is
not pleased.
So what do you think? The US has been pushing copyright into
every trade deal that it cuts for decades, thus putting it on the
negotiating table alongside agricultural goods and
pharmaceuticals. Now that the world's highest trade authority has
convicted the US of rejecting fair trade, where do they go from
here? Fascinating stuff!
