IPAC polls users to set its goals.

IPac is a nonpartisan group dedicated to preserving individual freedom through balanced information policy. They are currently polling members to set their goals for the upcoming campaign season. Carl Malamud (board member at Mozilla Foundation and former chairman of the Internet Software Consortium) talks about problems with the copyright restrictions on the images warehoused at the Smithsonian Institution and available online. By distributing the memo, Public.Resource.Org hopes to achieve three goals:
" 1. The unwieldy archive of low-resolution images on the Smithsonian site makes it hard for people to ascertain the public domain status of the vast majority of these images. By placing the database on sites such as Flickr and in convenient-to-examine PDF and tarball formats, we hope that the Internet commnunity is able to form a better judgement.
2. Some images are clearly in the public domain and of immense public importance. For these images, our nonprofit organization is attempting to systematically purchase these images and place them on the net for use without restriction.
3. We would like to see the Smithsonian adopt a policy for on-line distribution that is much more closely aligned to their mission, focusing on vastly increasing the store of public domain materials available on the Internet."

Hello Chicago Folks!
I've had a number of subscribe requests, so I think the time is ripe to revive Chicago Copynight. Our current information says we meet the fourth Tuesday of each month, which is next week. It also says we meet at Riverview Tavern at 1958 W. Roscoe St. I think we might need to change that to accommodate people more easily, so I'm requesting suggestions for a meeting place. Which neighborhoods are convenient for most of you? What time? Is Tuesday the best night?
Next week, too, I think we should meet to discuss what Chicago Copynight can do to become a more vital entity.

Just a reminder, we're back on with Copynight in Chicago, starting tonight at the Riverview Tavern (Roscoe at Damen). I won't be there until 7:000ish, but that's no reason for the rest of you not to get started without me!

February 28th is the next scheduled Copynight. I cannot get to the Tavern before 7:00pm (my teaching schedule has changed this semester). This month, I'd like to focus on making the group more active. See you all in two weeks.

Well, folks. Summer's over, so let's see if we can get Chicago Copynight restarted. We've had a few new sign-ups to the list, and I'm hoping this means we'll have better turn-out at events. To help me get September planned, please let me know whether an earlier time (5:30) or a later time (7:00) works best for you. Also, suggestions for meeting places are welcomed.

June Copynight is scheduled for 28 June. The May turnout was a little disappointing (although the conversation was nonetheless interesting) and it has been suggested that time/venue were a problem for some folks. So, I'm looking for suggestions of time or place that are more attractive for the members of the list.

"Freedom Is On the March" is tonight's theme. We meet at 6:00 pm at the Riverview Tavern, 1958 W Roscoe St (at Damen). Hope to see all of you and many friends there.
