CopyNight is being moved so it can be held in conjunction with the first test election of a new open voting system. While unrelated to Copyright issues, hopefully many of you will be interested in both. You can read more at <Punchscan.org>.
So please come out, have a beverage, discuss Copyright issues, and if you wish, also cast a vote in perhaps the first open and user-auditable election.
In terms of topic, here is my suggestion for potential conversation fodder:
EFF and Libraries Support Google Image Search Against Adult Website
The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) and a coalition of library organizations filed a brief with the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in San Francisco on Thursday supporting Google Image Search in a showdown over critical digital copyright issues. Adult entertainment publisher Perfect 10 claims that Google's Image Search service violates copyright law by indexing Perfect 10 photos posted on unauthorized websites, then making and delivering thumbnail images of those photos in its search results. Perfect 10 also contends that Google should be held liable for any copyright infringement that occurs on sites that Google links to. "Perfect 10 wants to hold Google responsible for the misdeeds of the websites it links to," said Senior Intellectual Property Attorney Fred von Lohmann. "No search engine could survive if that were the rule, nor, for that matter, could most bloggers or other web publishers. If Perfect 10 succeeds in convincing the court that in-line linking and framing
of images constitutes a public display or distribution of copyrighted work, then millions of web publishers and bloggers will suddenly be on the wrong side of copyright law—as well as the millions of web users who may follow a link to a website with infringing content." For full story, see <http://www.eff.org/news/archives/2006_07.php#004836>.
Thanks everyone for attending May's inaugural CopyNight. Tomorrow, June 27th, is your next chance to talk tech and information policy. Like last time, it’s being held at The Royal Oak (on Laurier) at 6pm and everyone is welcome.
The suggested theme for this month’s Copynight is: Competing Interests: Making Copyright Fun vs. Making Fun of Copyright.
Below are some “fun” copyright-related links.
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Exhibit A – Captain Copyright
Have you seen the Captain Copyright (www.captaincopyright.ca) website? If not, you might be interested to see that he even tries to give a kid-friendly explanation of moral rights:
“A creator’s right to be associated with his or her work; the right not to have the work used in a way that offends the creator; and the creator’s right to the integrity of the work (for example, a sculptor has the right to decide if his or her sculpture can be painted). Moral rights cannot be transferred to anyone else. However, the creator of a work can decide not to exercise his or her moral rights.”
Exhibit B -- Bound By Law? Tales From the Public Domain.
Law professors Keith Aoki, James Boyle and Jennifer Jenkins co-wrote and produced the comic book Bound By Law? Tales From the Public Domain. It explores the legal barriers documentary filmmakers in particular must hurdle, or simply avoid. A free digital version is available online: http://www.law.duke.edu/cspd/comics/digital.html

Please feel free to email me any with comments, suggestions, or topic ideas.
See you tomorrow,
