LAST CopyNight Seattle - Tomorrow!

Hello All,
I have decided to cease running CopyNight after this month due to the unsustainably low turnout, but I would like to invite you all to come out one last time for the final Seattle CopyNight, tomorrow, February 26, at 8:30 PM at the Elysian Brewery, 1221 E. Pike. It's been a lot of fun hosting this event over the past year and a half, and I would like to encourage everybody to attend some of the great geek events that have sprung up around town:
Seattle Saturday House, www.saturdayhouse.org - Seattle Saturday House is a weekly gathering of several people who meet and do ... whatever they want! People work on projects, people talk about ideas, people conspire and hatch plans, and people play games with each other. It's been called "BarCamp every Saturday," though it's a bit smaller than BarCamp.
Ignite Seattle, igniteseattle.com - Ignite is a series of geek nights in Seattle. It is hosted by Brady Forrest of O’Reilly Radar and Bre Pettis of Make. The nights feature a series of fast-paced, short-form tech talks, and occasionally feature a Make contest (like a popsicle bridge-building contest) as well. The event is thrown every couple of months at the Capitol Hill Arts Center.
Thanks for coming to CopyNight, and I hope to see you at our last hurrah tomorrow!
Hey CopyNighters,
Come join us for the last CopyNight of 2007 on Tuesday at 8:30 PM at the Elysian, 1221 E. Pike St. in Capitol Hill. We won't be meeting in December, so this will be your last chance until the new year to discuss such exciting topics as the latest bad ideas about copyright to surface in Congress, Larry Lessig's PowerPoint chops, or the pressure being exerted by the Copyright Alliance (which counts the MPAA and RIAA among its member) on presidential candidates to take a position in favor of even more expansion of copyright law:
See you on Tuesday!
CopyNight Is Tomorrow, Tuesday, at 8:30!

Hey Seattle CopyNighters,
Just a follow-up to yesterday's message to remind you that CopyNight will be tomorrow, Tuesday the 23rd, at 8:30 PM at the Elysian brewery, 1221 E. Pike St. in Capitol Hill. Have a beer and talk about the latest news from the copyfight.
On behalf of our Washington Lawyers for the Arts members, I'd like to take a moment to promote a great event the WLA is hosting on Thursday, Nov. 8 at Central Cinema. It's a variety show to benefit local artists who need legal assistance. Tickets are only $20. It should be a lot of fun, so please come! More info is available here, along with a pretty flyer for you to print up and hand out to every person you know (and some you don't):
http://www.thewla.org/RelatedEvents.html
See you tomorrow at CopyNight, and Nov. 8 at the WLA benefit!
Recording labels win first illegal file-sharing suit to go to trial

A federal jury awarded six recording companies $222,000 Thursday in Virgin v. Thomas, the first music file-sharing lawsuit to go to trial, ordering Jammie Thomas to pay for sharing 24 copyrighted songs on the Internet. Record companies have filed over 26,000 lawsuits since 2003 over file-sharing, resulting in small settlements for most cases, including 8,000 cases filed against 17 defendants worldwide last October.
Copyright Book Event - This Wednesday!

Hi CopyNighters,
A new book by a UW Communications professor looks like it would be of interest to this list. Prof. Harold is having a couple of events in October to promote her book. Check them out!

Book events for OurSpace: Resisting the Corporate Control of Culture by Christine Harold
In OurSpace, Christine Harold examines the deployment and limitations of "culture jamming" by activists. For Harold, it is a different type of opposition that offers a genuine alternative to corporate consumerism. Exploring the revolutionary Creative Commons movement, copyleft, and open source technology, Harold advocates a more inclusive approach to intellectual property that invites innovation and wider participation in the creative process.
Christine Harold is a professor in the Department of Communications at the University of Washington. Her previous position was assistant professor of speech communication at the University of Georgia.
Lessig Lecture at UW, Nov. 2

Hey all,
Thanks to those who were able to make it out to CopyNight last night. We chatted about who might be a suitable replacement for Larry Lessig as the head of the Creative Commons. I learned today that Prof. Lessig will be giving a lecture on the UW campus on Friday, Nov. 2, at 7:00 PM in room 130 of Kane Hall. His topic: "Is Google (2008) Microsoft (1998)?"
Mark your calendars! More information here:
http://www.grad.washington.edu/lectures/schedule.htm#Lawrence%20Lessig
Hope you can make it!
We're back from our August break! Come on down to the Elysian Brewing Company tomorrow, Tuesday the 25th, at 8:30 PM, and ease into a new school year with a beer or two and the happy knowledge you're not at Harvard, facing make-believe claims of intellectual property in your textbooks' ISBNs:
